WS010 : Pool Plant Operations - Basic

Description
Designed for those personnel responsible for the day to day safe and efficient technical operation of swimming pools, ranging from Pool Managers and Duty Managers/Supervisors to Pool Plant Operators/Engineers, Lifeguards and School Caretakers.
Objective
To provide the basic knowledge and understanding required for the safe and hygienic operation of swimming pools. Includes pool water testing, the chemistry and treatment of pool water and current COSHH requirements.
Syllabus
- Sources & effects of pollution – how and why it occurs in a swimming pool
- PH – understand pH and its effects on disinfection efficiency
- Disinfection of pool water – effects of breakpoint chlorination and the impact of ammonia
- Chemicals used in safe management of pool water – effects and application for different chemicals
- Safety procedures – general precautions for storing handling and using chemicals
- Circulation of swimming pool water – pool water hydraulics, turnover and circulation rates
- Filtration – know and understand the principles and practice of filtration

Lectures / demonstrations / practical exercise
Student Assessment
Certification will be based on attendance and successful completion of a number of exercises, such as pool water quality testing and verbal questioning.
Validity
On successful completion a certificate of attendance is issued.
