WS006 : Basic Pool Safety
Duration
1 day (8 hours)
Description
Designed for persons working in the pool environment who have a duty of care for pool users. It is not a lifeguard qualification, and rescue skills are restricted to wading and dry-side. But it can be used as a preliminary step to make staff aware of the level of training required for professional lifeguard status.
Objective
To give trainees who have not received any previous training the knowledge, understanding and practical skills necessary to respond to an incident to save life and restrict further injury.

- Water safety and accident prevention
- Pool observation and supervision skills
- Poolside rescue equipment
- Principles of rescue and manual handling
- Rescue techniques-wading and dry-side
- Casualty management
- CPR skills
Training Methods
Lectures/demonstrations/practical exercises
Student Assessment
Continuous assessment, candidates must show competency in the above skills throughout the course.
Completion of course worksheets and a MCQP
Validity
2 years from date of successful completion of the course, provided continuous practice is undertaken and recorded.
Entry Requirements
Minimum age of 16 years prior to the first day of course
Candidates who cannot swim must demonstrate the ability to wade and effect a rescue in a water no deeper then 1.2 metres.
