WS001 : Pool Lifeguard Course


Duration

6 days - 38 hours training plus assessment

Description

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is acknowledged as a minimum requirement for staff and the basic qualification for those involved in the supervision of swimming pools.

Objective

To introduce trainees to the knowledge and skills required for efficient and safe swimming pool supervision and incident management.

Syllabus

  • Water safety and accident prevention
  • Pool observation and supervision skills
  • Written operating procedures
  • Poolside rescue equipment
  • Drowning, dry drowning and secondary drowning
  • Communication methods
  • Casualty recognition
  • Principles of rescue and manual handling
  • Concept of progressive rescue
  • Spinal cord injury management
  • CPR and First Aid

Training Methods

Lectures/demonstrations/practical exercises

Student Assessment

Theory and skills. Note there is no written exam.

Validity

2 years from date of successful completion of the course.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 years prior to the first day of course
  • Must be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria Jump /dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in 1 minute
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the bottom of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits
