SS001 : Personal Safety in Modern Society
Duration
8 hours (1day) course.
Description
A course designed to help empower you to live your life to the full, and not be constrained by fears and anxieties about personal safety.
Objective
To make candidates aware of the skills and strategies they can employ to improve their own safety and that of others at their work place and to show them how to assess and reduce risks and deal with aggression. Skills are imparted in such a way that they should become instinctive, giving the confidence to deal with difficult situations, and subconsciously apply the principles of personal security in everyday life.

Part One: How to Assess Risks
- Strategies to Reduce and Avoid Risks
- Organising your Current Practice and Procedures
- Safer Travel and Travelling Away from Home
- Summoning Emergency Services and Help
Part Two: Communication – Verbal and Non-Verbal
- Awareness of Cultural Differences
- Personal Space / Territorial Issues
Part Three: Behavioural issues
- Being Assertive (and how to say NO)
- Relaxation and Tension Control
Part Four: Dealing with Aggression
- Responding to Physical Attack
Training Methods
Lectures / Power-point presentation / demonstrations / video and practical exercises
Student Assessment
Continuous assessment - candidates must show competency in the above skills throughout the course
Completion of course worksheets and a MCQP - Practical rescue skills assessment
Validity
2 years from date of successful completion of the course, provided continuous practice is undertaken and recorded.
